When you think of 1865, stirring memories flood our minds with significant historical events that happened. The 13th amendment was ratified to abolish slavery; the sitting President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated; the Civil War officially ended; and the First Baptist Church of Marion, Illinois was established. Although the latter may not be mentioned in the educational history books, it is very important to those of us who carry on the passion and purposes that began 150 years ago in the hearts and minds of our charter members.
If you are looking for a church that has stood the test of time and is still ministering regionally in Southern Illinois and worldwide through our cooperative mission efforts with the Southern Baptist Convention, then let me invite you to join us as we continue the ministry in Jesus’ name.
I hope you will be able to worship with us in person at 10 AM each Sunday morning or watch our services recorded live from the week before on the Heartland CW Channel (WQWQ-TV) at 11 am each Sunday morning. Of course, we also have Bible Study in Sunday School classes for all ages at 8:50 am, an evening worship service at 6 pm on Sunday nights, and a prayer meeting/Bible Study time at 6 pm on Wednesday nights. The evening services also have separate children and youth activities designed for them to grow in their knowledge of the Bible and discipleship.
Our goal will be to welcome you to our services and invite you to become part of our church family and Christian fellowship if you live in this area without a church home. If you are visiting in the Marion area, you will be most welcome to join us for worship as long as your stay allows.
We have a saying on the wall in the foyer that summarizes our goals for ministry which are to love God, love others, and live the life Jesus died on the cross to give us. Here is my promise to you. When you worship with us we will sing songs of love and adoration to our Lord, we will preach the word of God as the truth, and we will lift Jesus up claiming His promise: And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself." [John 12:32 (NKJV)]
We have been lifting up Jesus for 150 years and will continue to do so until He comes. May God bless you for reading this and if it is God’s will, we hope to see you this Sunday morning at worship. At the end of the service please take a moment to say, "Hi" because I would really like to meet you. Until then...24 "The LORD bless you and keep you; 25 The LORD make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you; 26 The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace." '[Numbers 6:24-26 (NKJV)]
